Author talk

 

Award-winning author Jane Brox will be the guest speaker at the Boston Athenaeum, 10½ Beacon St., at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

 

Brox is the author of “Silence: A Social History of One of the Least Understood Elements of Our Lives.” In it she illuminates the place of silence in society, as both a means of liberation and oppression, and the extremes it gave rise to continue to reverberate in today’s culture.

 

Brox is the author of “Brilliant: The Evolution of Artificial Light,” “Clearing Land” and “Here and Nowhere Else.” She has received the New England Book Award for non-fiction and the PEN New England Award.

 

Admission is free.

Traditional Scottish music

 

King’s Chapel, corner of School and Tremont streets, will welcome the Concordia Baroque in concert at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

 

In a salute to Robbie Burns, the ensemble will play traditional music from Scotland.

 

A donation of $3 is requested; all contributions are given directly to the musicians.
