Life of Phillis Wheatley

The Old South Church, 645 Boylston St., will present a talk “Phillis Wheatley Comes Home: The Boston Poet Returns to Old South Church” from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24.

Using previously unexplored material and adding fresh perspectives, Richard Kigel, author of “Heav’nly Tidings from the Afric Muse: The Grace and Genius of Phillis Wheatley,” presents Wheatley as a flesh and blood woman and accomplished literary artist, and reevaluates the significant role she played in the birth of the nation.

Insights by 300 years of Wheatley scholars, authentic statements by her contemporaries and her own words taken from her writings present a vivid picture of Wheatley in her time, resurrecting the spirit of the poet for 21st century America.

Admission is free.
