Family play day

 

A free family play day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Institute of Contemporary Art, 100 Northern Ave.

 

Families can catch independent films from around the world, including live-action, documentary, animation and experimental works. The films are best suited for ages 6 and up.

 

Admission is free for two adults per family with children under 12 years old. Registration is not required.

Memorial fund gala

 

The community is invited to the fourth annual Higgins Memorial Fund Winter Gala from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Westin Waterfront, 425 Summer St.

 

Attendees will enjoy complimentary beer and wine, delicious food and an opportunity to win prizes including overnight hotel stays, dinner at some of Boston’s best restaurants and a chance to win $10,000. Festivities will also include musical entertainment.

 

Tickets are $125 and must be purchased in advance – no tickets will be sold at the door.

 

The purpose of The Donny Higgins Memorial Fund, Inc., a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization, is to maintain the street hockey rink and to promote and support South Boston youth sports programs.

Home show

 

The 67th New England Home Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Seaport World Trade Center, 1 Seaport Lane.

 

Visitors can see a range of home improvement ideas from lighting to flooring, techniques and tools, furniture and gardening with 500 experts to answer DIY questions.

 

Live cooking demonstrations, a furniture-building zone, a kid’s fun zone, seminars, handmade artisan crafts and specialty food areas will be featured.

 

Admission at the door is $12. Children, ages 17 and under, are admitted for free. Tickets sold online will be $10. Admission is free on Friday.

Classic romance

 

In honor of St. Valentine’s Day, the South Boston Branch Library, 646 East Broadway, will screen the film voted the most romantic movie of all time, “Casablanca” starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Open studios

 

Artists for Humanity at 100 West Second St. will host an open studio event from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27.

 

Attendees will enjoy networking, live art making and being inspired by the creative studios and wine and cheese.

 

Artists For Humanity’s mission is to bridge economic, racial and social divisions by providing under-resourced urban youth a chance for self-sufficiency through paid employment in art and design.

‘Pajama Party’

 

The Institute of Contemporary Art, 100 Northern Ave., will host a special First Friday program “Pajama Party” from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 1.

 

Attendees can show up in PJs for a night of music, slumber party mainstays such as Mad Libs, a hygge lounge, dancing, games and art.

 

There will also be a live performance by Boston’s premier 90’s live music experience, Killer Tofu. Shirt and pants are required; slippers are optional. The $15 ticket includes museum admission and a complimentary drink. Members are admitted free. The evening is for 21 plus. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Breakfast fundraiser

 

The South Boston Citizens’ Association will sponsor the annual Jimmy Flaherty Breakfast from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 2 at the Seapoint Restaurant at 367 East Eighth St. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.

 

The Henry Knox Unsung Hero award will be presented to outstanding volunteers from the community, and a buffet breakfast will be served. Musical group Curragh’s Fancy will provide the entertainment.

Harbor market

 

The ICA Harbor Market will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 at the Institute of Contemporary Art, 100 Northern Ave.

 

The community is invited to stop by ICA Harbor Market, an artisan takeover of the museum’s first floor, and shop Boston’s boldest local vendors, with artisans, food, music, games and art making. They can also grab food and drink samples from Southie favorites.
