Grand Canyon art

The Boston Athenaeum, 10½ Beacon St., will welcome guest speaker Lindsay Leard- Collidge in “Sublime Impressions: Prints and Printmakers of the Grand Canyon” at noon on Tuesday, March 5.

Topographers, illustrators and painter-printmakers explored and created images of the Grand Canyon and the evolution of these genres parallels the history of American printmaking in the 19th and early 20th century centuries. Despite their significance, these works have not been extensively studied like those of painters and photographers.

Leard-Coolidge’s book traces the history of printmaking in the Grand Canyon from the topographical maps of the first explorers to the abstract works of 20th century modernists to see how the medium changed the ways the Grand Canyon was represented and the public’s perception of it.

Admission is free.
