Film festival

Magic 106.7 is hosting a family film festival at sundown on Saturdays at the Prudential Center, 800 Boylston St.

Entertainment, children’s activities and giveaways will begin at 6 p.m.

The movies will include “Disney Pixar’s “The Incredibles” on Aug. 4; Disney’s animated feature “Mulan” on Aug. 11, Disney’s “Tarzan” on Aug 18 and the recent release “A Wrinkle in Time” starring Chris Pine and Oprah Winfrey on Aug 25.

Picnic baskets and blankets are welcome.

English and Scottish ancestry

The New England Historical Genealogical Society, 99-101 Newbury St., will present “Researching Your English, Welsh or Scottish Ancestry at the National Archives (UK) from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8.

The National Archives in the UK holds an array of documents critical to family historians, spanning over 1,000 years of history. Records specialist Audrey Collins will introduce the family resources available both online and on site and how to access them and give valuable research tips on delving more deeply into Welsh, Scottish and English roots.

Three recitals

The Boston Tanglewood Institute will offer three recitals on Monday, Aug. 6 at Trinity Church, 206 Clarendon St.

Members of the Young Artists Vocal Program will perform at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and the Young Artists Piano Program will perform at 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Music of Melba Liston

Historic New England will host a free program on the music of Melba Liston from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St.

Using the book, “Little Melba and her Big Trombone,” students will meet Liston, an extraordinary jazz trombonist who faced numerous challenges in her life to create toe-tapping tunes. They can look at instruments from the past, listen to Melba’s music, and create a musical instrument to take home with them.
